This sour ale brewed with plums is tart, refreshing, and has the faintest touch of salinity. (Sawā' means 'sour' in Japanese.) This refreshing tartness reminds me of Berliner-Weiss-style beers.
The beer pours a lovely purple-tinged salmon color, opaque with opalescent cloudiness, and a fleeting pink foam. Aromatically the ale smells of plums, citrus, cream, and yeasty notes. On the palate, Sawa Plum drinks light, crisp, and tart, with abundant lactic acidity. The finish is lengthy and dry. First out of the fridge, Sawa Plum presents mostly just clean and tart plum flavors, but after a handful of minutes spent warming up a few degrees, savory grain flavors become apparent, and a slight and pleasant mineral saltiness starts to show up. This is a lovely plum-juicy sour beer that I'm looking forward to drinking outside this spring. Amidst plum blossoms even!
Japas Cervejaria is run by Maíra Kimura, Yumi Shimada, and Fernanda Ueno, three women who merged their talents into a brewery following their love of beer and their shared Japanese-Brazilian heritage. Their beer is primarily produced in Sao Paolo, Brazil, however this particular one was brewed in Chicago.
Sāwa Plum pairs well with pizza, salad, grilled pork, goat cheese, and cream sauced pasta.
4.7% ABV, 7 IBU.
